Stages of Post-Production
1. Editing
Picture editing involves selecting, sequencing, and splicing shots into a coherent narrative, establishing the film's rhythm and pace. A rough cut is created, and after approval by the director and producer, the picture lock occurs, which is the signal to begin advanced work on sound and visual effects.
2. Color Correction and Grading
Color correction aims to standardize the color across shots filmed in varying lighting conditions. Color grading gives the film its ultimate visual style, influencing its mood and aesthetic (e.g., warm, cool, grainy).
3. Sound Design
Sound work includes:
- Dialogue editing and noise reduction.
- ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement), which is re-recording studio dialogue if the on-set recordings were poor quality.
- Foley, which is the addition of synchronous sound effects (e.g., footsteps, breaking glass).
- Sound design, adding non-synchronous effects and building atmosphere.
- Music scoring (composing and recording the soundtrack).
- Sound mixing and mastering, the final balancing of all audio tracks (dialogue, music, effects).
4. Visual Effects (VFX)
VFX involves creating or modifying visual elements that could not be realized during principal photography. This includes the use of green screen (chroma keying), 3D animation, generating digital characters or environments, and compositing (combining different image layers).
